Our Holocaust and Civil Rights class is on a mission to collect as many buttons as possible to remember the 1.5 million children, 16 years old and younger, whose lives were cut short in the Holocaust. The buttons will take the form of a butterfly, with inspiration from the book I Never Saw Another Butterfly, a collection of poetry and drawings from the children of the Holocaust. The buttons were stripped off of Jewish people’s clothing as they were being led to their inevitable deaths. Images of butterflies were also left on the walls of barracks as a sign of hope. We wish to have this same hope of non-prejudice shown in our school.
